Coaching is indeed a privilege. With it, comes the tremendous responsibility of giving back to the game. Through sharing, our players benefit, our programs advance, and we realize personal growth.

Can-Am coaching clinic a success
This years guest presenters, coaches Dave Odom, Don Casey, and Greg Kampe, gave all of the coaches tremendous content, shared several stories (illustrating examples of what is required to be a better player at any level), and demonstrated their expertise with wonderful passion. Thanks again to all three of them for their support and willingness to share. When combined with Coach Oliver's session of practice drills and individual workouts, the overall clinic provided a fantastic opportunity for learning. Stay tuned to the blog, Twitter, and Facebook fan pages for continued learning from the clinic.
Final thanks are owed to the University of Windsor Athletic Dept. and staff, valued clinic sponsors, COBA, host hotel (Holiday Inn Select, Windsor), Windsor Lancer coaches and players (the men and women that worked very hard on court both days), drivers of the guest coaches, and countless volunteers that helped along the way. Next year's clinic is only 12 months away, and the work has already begun!

Zone Offense Concepts
Zone Offense:
1. Beat it down the floor
2. Rebound
3. Get ball in the pocket with players that can make plays looking Rim, Post & Opposite
4. Screen out, Seal out / Forward guarding guy, passes to top & makes cut off screen into pocket. Post then seals out on forward on catch
5. Throw back into 3 or 4 players / Loop Flash. Cut thru on baseline with 4-man off post screen. Loop shooter to top & flash opposite wing. Same action
6. Loop Skip / Post up the next defender. Make defender go over the top of the screen in to allow pass to baseline to post
Also here is a commonly used overload set play vs. a 2-3 Zone in video format:

Coaches are ready to teach
Imagine how keen Coach Don Casey (Temple of Zones) is right now! He's watching Phoenix cause LA all sorts of difficulty because they are playing great zone D. As Coach Casey said yesterday, "the stars are aligned" perfectly, it's a great time to teach concepts and principles of zone defense. He went on to say that "regardless of the outcome of the series, Phoenix has shown that zone defense should be part of the defensive package for all teams."
Clinic attendance is growing daily. Coaches are signing up with friends and saving money. If you plan to attend, go to the clinic site to see details, and get the form. Given the timing, please just bring your form and payment with you but email cobacamp@hotmail.com so that your name is on the advance list (for prizes, free lunch, etc). Looking forward to seeing you!

Coaching clinic in 15 days
Attendance is growing every day, mostly by word of mouth - special thanks to all those spreading the news! The coaches' social is set for the Friday night and is all organized. The host hotel has reserved many rooms for visiting coaches but only has a few remaining at the great low clinic rate. Lunch on Saturday has been ordered. The draw prizes (happening all weekend) have been boxed and are ready to be awarded.
A few coaches have indicated that they are only able to attend on Saturday. Not a problem - there's an even lower rate for just one day. Contact Coach Oliver for the rate and he'll make sure you are on the registration list. The learning will be tremendous, and the sharing even greater - don't miss this great opportunity!

ANOTHER great coach at Can-Am Clinic
For a complete bio of Coach Kampe, please visit the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies site. By way of a summary, Coach Kampe has enjoyed a successful run of 26 years at Oakland, most recently guiding his team to consecutive 23+ win seasons. Within his conference, he has been selected as "Coach of the Year" four times out of the last ten seasons, including a "National Coach of the Year" nod from CollegeInsider.com.
Coach Kampe is highly regarded as an excellent clinic coach who, like our other two presenting coaches Dave Odom and Don Casey, will provide the June clinic attendees with excellent value.

Coaching Clinic - 2009 workout highlight
For a highlight from one of last year's intense sessions with Coach Larry Shyatt (Assistant Coach to Billy Donovan at University of Florida), please go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3zMleGByPY or http://www.youtube.com/user/cobacamp and enjoy. You will be watching a Windsor Lancer forward working very hard to get in the target number of high quality reps of a sprint to ball screen, slip, shoot, and shoot of a second ball. Coach Shyatt was always clear in his instruction - in order for players to reach their next level, they need to put in the quality work in the gym (both in season and off season).
Watch for an announcement over the next few days. Coaches Don Casey and Dave Odom have confirmed for June 4th-5th, and the third coach is about to be announced. Again, for those coaches wishing to attend the clinic please simply go to the online form at cobacamp.com.

Coaching Clinic - June 2010 , Coaches Odom and Casey
With the 2010 Can-Am On-Court Basketball Coaches Clinic just over four months away, it is time to share some exciting news. This summer’s clinic (once again, sponsored by cobacamp.com) promises to be one of the best ever - as always, entertaining and insightful. The presenters will deliver an impactful message, provide clinic attendees with a wealth of information, and may change how some coaches view team basketball.
As of today, Coach Don Casey and Coach Dave Odom have made an enthusiastic commitment to spend two days (June 4-5, 2010) sharing knowledge in Windsor, Ontario. Coach Casey is well known for his NBA coaching experience and his recent book (2008) entitled Own The Zone which he wrote with Ralph Pim. A master of teaching zone principles, Coach Casey has worked with some of the best coaches and teams in the sport – Paul Westhead, John Calipari, PJ Carlesimo, Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics, and Team USA 2008. Given his international experience and his sport leadership positions, Coach Casey provides a well rounded vision and approach to the game.
Coach Odom, highly regarded for recruiting and helping develop Tim Duncan while coaching at Wake Forest, is a four time recipient of conference (ACC and SEC) Coach of the Year honors. With Final Four experience, NCAA tournament success, and NIT championships to his credit, Coach Odom has an impressive resume of college coaching experience. Teams that have benefited from his expertise are Virginia, Wake Forest, and South Carolina (who recently handed high flying, and number one ranked, Kentucky their first loss). Presently, apart from being a clinic speaker in great demand, Coach Odom is Chairman of the popular NCAA preseason EA Sports Maui Invitational that takes place every Thanksgiving.
This year’s clinic will be held June 4th-5th at the University of Windsor (St. Denis Centre). For the clinic brochure, go to www.cobacamp.com/coachesClinic.html .
